Launch Mac apps from one search field

The Dock is a good home for a handful of apps and a poor one for everything else. Supermac's launcher is one native search field: press the shortcut, type part of the app name, press Enter.

Open an app without leaving the keyboard

  1. Press the Supermac shortcut

The launcher opens over whatever you are doing. You can change the shortcut in Supermac's settings if the default does not fit your keyboard.

  2. Start typing the app name

Apps appear as you type. A few letters are usually enough to bring the app you want to the top.

  3. Press Enter

Enter opens the first match. If the first result is not the right one, keep typing or move down the list before you open it.

Opening apps does not need extra permissions. Permission prompts belong to features such as window snapping, not to launching an app.

The same field does more than launch

Once the launcher is part of your muscle memory, the rest of the field is free. It answers math inline, finds emoji and symbols, and applies window layouts, so you do not need a separate calculator or emoji picker.

That matters for small interruptions: a sum you need to paste into a document, an emoji in a message, or a window that should move out of the way. Each one stays inside the same field instead of becoming another app switch.

Bring your tools into the launcher

Plugins add app-specific actions to the same search field. The plugin directory includes 1Password for vault items and one-time codes, Homebrew for packages, GitHub for repository work, Linear for issues and Warp for terminal tabs and windows.

Install the plugins for the tools you actually use. A launcher full of unused integrations is just a second Dock with more setup.

Set the shortcut you will keep

A launcher only saves time if opening it is automatic. Choose a shortcut you can press without looking, then use it for a day before adding another launcher or hotkey to the mix.

Supermac lets you change the launcher shortcut in its settings. Pick the combination that does not collide with the shortcuts you already rely on.

A small routine to try

  • Stop reaching for the Dock for apps that are not already pinned there. Type the name instead.
  • Use the same field for a calculation before opening a calculator app.
  • Search for the emoji or symbol while you are still typing the message.
  • Open plugin actions from the launcher instead of switching to the service's website.
